Sustainability commendation for 588 Hay Street

588 Hay Street received a Commendation in the newly-created Sustainable Buildings category at the City of Subiaco Heritage, Conservation and Sustainable Buildings Awards presented on Monday 16 May. The awards recognise excellence in sustainable design, construction and operation.

Our commended project started with a feasibility study to determine how best to redevelop a 2 storey commercial office building that no longer met with contemporary standards. With adaptive re-use the preferred option, we transformed the building into a high-performance, open-plan commercial office with a Grade A entry lobby and an appealing street presence.

Our practice enjoys the challenge of exploring  the relationship between environmental, social and economic sustainability. Current research indicates that the biggest on-going cost in a commercial building is the people who work there. The value in creating naturally lit and ventilated spaces goes beyond reducing energy consumption. Happy and productive employees deliver financial benefits, as people who are healthy both physically and mentally are more productive and less likely to be absent. Our work will continue to investigate ways in which design can enhance sustainability through well-being.
